Dry Bones Kart 7 is the seventh installment in the Dry Bones Kart series released for the 3DS. It came out on May 10, 2014 for Japan, May 11, 2014 for Europe, May 24, 2014 for North America, and May 27, 2014 for Australia. It introduces bikes and stunts. Like every previous installment, Dry Bones Kart 7 has 12 racers per race.
The game plays similarly to the previous Dry Bones Kart installments: using items scattered around the track, players and computer-controlled opponents must race around the track, avoiding obstacles and items gained from Item Boxes to win. Depending on the game mode, various different things can be won:
In Classic GP and Grand Prix mode, players win points that go towards their total. The racer with the highest total at the end of the cup, wins.
In Time Trials mode, players must race against time for the fastest possible outcome. They can do this alone ("1TT"), with others locally ("LTT") or against ghosts of the highest ranked on the Online Leaderboards ("OlTT").
Depending on the battle mode, players can win differently. Each time, players' scores get tallied, allowing for tournament or versus-style challenges.
Grand Prix
In Grand Prix mode, players must race in a cup of their choice, containing four cups. Points are awarded depending on the places that the player places in, and the person with the largest number of points at the end of all four races, wins. This is the mode where almost everything is unlocked.
This mode can not be played with two or more players.
Time Trials
Players race against time on a course of their choice. Racing against no one, or a ghost (of a "staff ghost" - Nintendo employee, another player on the same system, or an "expert staff ghost" - another Nintendo employee). Beating the normal "staff ghost" by more than 7 seconds, will unlock the expert staff ghost for that course.
Versus
Versus Mode is a returning mode from previous installments of the series. Like in Mario Kart Wii, Versus Mode is the main playable mode for multiplayer, and includes the ability to customise the races in various ways, being able to choose how tough the computers are, should there even be computers, the number of laps, the number of computers, should hazards be on, the items that can be obtained (either balanced, strategic, aggressive or none, though there is a custom option as well), Classic Versus mode and Elimination Mode.
Battle Mode
Battle Mode, a somewhat popular game mode present in all incarnations of Dry Bones Kart, returns in Dry Bones Kart Wii, and introduces a new game type to choose from. Both battle modes are won in teams.
Balloon Battle
In Balloon Blast, racers must use items to pop the balloons of the other racers. Popping a balloon earns the team/person a point. The higher the number of points one has, the less common rare items become. Additionally, the Lightning Bolt - only available to people with 0 points - will pop on balloon from everyone, and acts as the "Golden Snitch" of the game. Getting all of your balloons popped will result in the person popping the final balloon getting 2 points instead of one, and the racer will respawn with three new ones.
Coin Runners
In Coin Runners, racers must race around the battle arena collecting coins. Hitting other players will result in them losing half of their coins, with them either spilling out of them, or flying away to respawn somewhere else on the map. In the beginning of the game, there are 50 coins that are spawned, meaning the most coins a person/team can get is 50. The number of coins is totalled for the entire team in team battles.
Many classic items make a return in Dry Bones Kart 7, including the POW Block and the Lightning Cloud from Dry Bones Kart Wii. The game introduces four new items; the Fire Flower, the Spiny Bombshell, the Super Leaf, and the Lucky Seven. The Mega Mushroom from Dry Bones Kart Wii is absent from the game. The Blue Spiny Shell from previous installments is also absent, along with Boo. Similar to its predecessors, players receive items by driving through an Item Box found on courses. When players drive through an Item Box, the Item Roulette will select an item. In addition to Item Boxes, Coins can be found on the track. Players can collect the coins by driving through them. Picking up a coin increases a player's top speed. If players collect ten coins, their kart is at maximum speed and cannot gain additional coins. Players lose coins if they get hit by an item or fall in a pit. Collecting a certain amount of coins unlocks vehicle parts to select them in the vehicle's customization menu. Also, unlike in its predecessor, the item warning sound will only play if a Spiny Bombshell or a Bullet Bill is approaching.
This item imitates an Item Box, but is colored red and has an upside down question mark. It causes opponents to flip over once hit. It cannot block item attacks.
A POW block appears onscreen and causes any racer on the ground ahead of the user to spin out and drop their items. Players who deploy the wheelie button get a milder version of the effect.
A thundercloud hovers over the recipient and strikes it with lightning after ten seconds. The user shrinks to very small size for 10 seconds, driving more slowly. Before this happens, the user has higher speed and acceleration while not losing speed when driving off-road, and may pass the cloud to an opponent by bumping into them.
Chases after the closest player in front of the player and knocks it over. Throwing it backwards will make it travel in a straight line, like a Green Shell.
Three red shells that protect the player from incoming attacks by rotating around its kart. They can then be thrown one by one. CPU players can't get this item in Grand Prix and VS modes.
After being thrown or dropped, it explodes after a moment or when a player comes too close, blasting any kart into the air that gets caught in its blast radius. It will also chase after players that comes by.
Mushroom
Gives the player a speed boost.
Triple Mushroom
Same effect as the Mushroom. It can be used three times.
Transforms the player into a Bullet Bill, which rockets down the entire track at high speeds on auto-pilot for a time that is determined by the player's current position. The Bullet Bill is invincible and can knock over items, course hazards and other players, which makes them lose any item in their possession.
Sprays ink on all the players ahead of the user and reduces their visibility. The ink will go away after a moment or when the player receives a boost from a Mushroom or a Boost Pad.
Causes all players, except the user, to drop their item, shrink, and have their kart's top speed reduced for a moment, the effect being longer for the players that are leading the race. They can also get squashed by normal-sized players.
The player obtains total invincibility for a moment and is able to knock over everything in its path including items, course obstacles and other players, making them lose their current item. In addition, the player receives a speed boost and the ability to drive off-road without losing any speed.
Allows the player to throw fireballs that bounces off walls and cause other players to spin out of control on impact. Up to three fireballs are allowed at a time per player, throwing a fourth one will make the oldest one disappear. If ten fireballs are used, this item wears off immediately.
Gives the player's kart a tail that can be used to deflect items, knock over opponents and collect coins. The tail will disappear after a moment or if the player is hurt.
Surrounds the player with seven items that rotates around its kart. The player receives a Mushroom, Banana, Green Shell, Red Shell, Blooper, Bob-omb, and a Star. CPU players can't get this item.
Characters
Many characters return from previous installments. There are also some new characters, like Baby Thunder Daisy, the rest of the Koopalings, and Lakithunder.
